Hudson House Limited

Rural Enterprise Centre

Hudson House Ltd is a community-led, not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. We aim to be responsive to the needs and wants of the people of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale.

The company is run by a Board of Directors, all volunteers, drawn from the local area; our Constitution allows a maximum of fifteen Directors. The Board is always happy to receive nominations for new Directors. There is no fixed term of office but Board members must stand down in rotation after three years; they may stand again for re-election. Board meetings are held every two months.

Hudson House employs a part-time Manager, Graham Wilkinson, who is happy to assist with enquiries, or to refer matters to the Board.

What we have to offer

  • A one-stop-shop for everyone. The Hudson House partnership model brings services, which would not otherwise be available, together under the one roof. Most of the Partners can cover at least part of the others' services:
    • It is, for example, possible to pay your Council Tax on a Sunday afternoon, but the person who helps you is likely to be a member of the National Park staff.
    • Staff and volunteers in Hudson House are happy to offer guidance, or help you contact the right department or person from any of the Partner organisations.
    • Front of house staff have been trained to carry out Police document checks.
    • Visitors may leave found property and be assured that it will be passed to the Police.
    • During Festival time, front of house staff deal with ticket sales.
  • By providing services at the heart of the dale, we reduce excessive journeys by car or public transport.

  • Hudson House staff can help businesses and individuals to seek and secure grant funding. In 2006 we were pleased to identify funds for the Swaledale Museum, and help them secure a grant.

  • Hudson House is not just a building, but part of the regeneration of the two dales. Recently we have worked with specific sections of the community on projects for young people, childcare, and community composting.

  • Every week the Yorkshire Dales National Park Planning Officer holds a surgery where local planning issues can be discussed in confidence.

  • Also weekly, Richmondshire District Council holds a Housing Benefit surgery.

  • We are pleased to welcome Citizens' Advice Bureau back to Hudson House. Starting in August 2007, CAB will offer confidential advice and help on a wide range of topics.

  • Volunteers are always welcome. We need people to lend a hand with a wide variety of jobs, including covering for the National Park in the winter months, helping the Swaledale Festival, or driving the community transport bus.
